Femi’s musical career started when he began playing in his father’s band, Egypt 80.

In 1986, Femi started his own band, Positive Force. He began establishing himself as an artist independent of his father’s massive legacy.  🎷🎺🎸🎹🎤

Since then, he has continued playing the music style his father was famous for, i.e afrobeat. Afrobeat can be defined as ‘a complex fusion of:

Femi also follows his father’s legacy with his strong commitments to social and political causes.  You can notice this in his songs’ lyrics on his website:

In this article you can see how engaged he is with the issues Nigerian people are currently facing: 😭😡

Favela Chic: eclectic DJ and reggae band (Paris, 2016)

FAVELA CHIC

This was a rather unplanned night out I went for on Wednesday 25th May 2016. Had dinner across the street and was attracted to this Favela Chic bar and restaurant. So, I came in and must say this was a great idea!

Favela Chic

This ‘Favela Chic’ club isn’t only playing – as the name suggests – Brazilian sounds, but a great variety of world music.

Here are few pictures of the venue, which I thought is quite rather original:

The Jaffa Cakes band – Live Jazz/Bossa Nova concert (Dublin, 2016)

JAFFA CAKES BAND

On Saturday 2nd January 2016 I attended this amazing live concert by 2 members of the Jaffa Cakes band at Cafe Dublin, 17b Asdill’s Row, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

I got the chance to meet both the lovely singer Plinny Phoenix and pianist Dario Rodighiero. I enjoyed so much their live jazz/bossa nova performance that I made a video out of it! The audience appreciated it as well. You can see and hear them cheering and clapping.

BAND MUSIC STYLES AND MEMBERS

The Jaffa Cakes band is a taste of the most famous songs in a retro style, that could be any genre of music, but mostly:

  • jazz,
  • blues,
  • swing,
  • funk.

They’ve got just a piano, drums and a voice. Yet they bring a unique mix of retro-modern songs in the blues, funk and jazz genre.

The 3 band members are:

  • Miss Phoenix @ Vocals
  • Dario Rodighiero Duck @ Piano
  • Paolo Zuddas @ Drums.

If you’d like to know more about each member, check their biographies:

Now getting excited and curious to listen to their music? If so, watch this video:

The duo maintains an ethical stance against corporate control over the media, especially hip-hop record labels.

For more information about their work, check the following Wikipedia article.

RELEASED ALBUMS

Furthermore, the multicultural collective surfaces with a hard-hitting new record in 2015, ‘Resistance’. This album resumes its link-up with UK-based Strut Records.

The composer Pierre Chrétien explains that they approached this album with a fresh ear. He says as well that: “We were keen to build on the band’s sound and message. So, I brought in some of the French Caribbean and Francophone West African influences that I’ve loved since my youth.”

Consequently, the new album adds fresh dancefloor-oriented elements of:

  • Coupé-Décalé
  • Zouk
  • and Ndombolo.

The resulting album is a defiant celebration of social justice and human empowerment.

MUSIC AWARDS

On the other hand, their first three released albums:

  •  Freedom No Go Die (2006, featuring the single ‘Mista President’)
  • Manifesto (2008)
  • Rising Sun (2010)

were nominated for Juno Awards.

Man In The Mirror, The Music Of Michael Jackson Irish Tour 2014

Michael Jackson Irish Tour

I attended a tribute show at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin on Saturday 28th June 2014 as part of a Michael Jackson Irish Tour.

So, if you missed it, you still have the opportunity to view snippets of the show! I took the videos right at the end of the show during their ‘encore’ as we weren’t allowed to film beforehand.

Although this particular tour with dancers is over, you may want to stay up-to-date with their next project through their Facebook page. Indeed, Johnny Walker and his band perform more or less every year in Ireland, so keep an eye on the ‘Events’ section! Not sure if the dancers are always following, though!

Also, I would like to congratulate Anthony Walker (singer), musicians and Dublin based dancers:

  • Mateusz Szczerek Slc
  • Alex AJ O’Neill Slc
  • Don King Rongavilla
  • Justin Fuentes
  • and Chris Dylus

for this amazing live performance!
