Fundraising gigs’ campaign for abortion rights in Dublin (Ireland)

ABORTION RIGHTS IN IRELAND

For those who do not live in Ireland, you may not know that abortion is still not allowed. Women are discouraged to abort regardless of circumstances. They must travel to the UK or other EU countries if they want to abort.

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR ABORTION RIGHTS

The gigs took place on Friday 10th March 2017 at Sin é pub, Dublin. They were organised by Bitches Brew & F-Festival celebrating women in the arts.

The purposes of this night were:

  • to fundraise for the Repeal movement
  • and bring awareness of the Irish law in terms of women’s abortion rights.🔥👍

SO, WHAT IS THE EIGHT AMENDMENT?

To get a better understanding of what this law entails, check these leaflets: 👇

THE GIGS

The event gathered four bands, mostly girls’ bands playing various music styles such as pop, blues, roots folk, rock, hard rock.

I arrived a little late for the event and also left early, so I only recorded two bands. But I will share with you some videos of the other two bands I missed. Bear in mind that the venue is very narrow in width, so I wasn’t always able to film from the best angle. Apologies for this!

I have indicated under the YouTube videos the respective bands’ Facebook fan pages,  if you’d like to follow them.

Which one you like most and why?

I will start to share with you a snippet I shared on my Instagram account:

And now full songs recorded or found on YouTube:

These are two Youtube videos I found of the other bands I have missed:

LIVE CONCERTS’ VIDEOS

Now, here is the moment you’ve all been waiting for,🎊 the live videos I took at the event!👏💝🎉

Apologises for the format, I should have filmed in landscape mode! Also, I haven’t filmed the last folk band ‘The Eskies’ as I ran out of battery. I’m sorry for this inconvenience.

You will find the Facebook fan page link for each band/singer in the description under each YouTube video. To view the description, click on the YouTube title to open the video in a new tab.

Enjoy! Tell us what’s your favourite act amongst them and why! If you have filmed them, too, feel free to share the link in the ‘comment’ box!

The Jaffa Cakes band – Live Jazz/Bossa Nova concert (Dublin, 2016)

JAFFA CAKES BAND

On Saturday 2nd January 2016 I attended this amazing live concert by 2 members of the Jaffa Cakes band at Cafe Dublin, 17b Asdill’s Row, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.

I got the chance to meet both the lovely singer Plinny Phoenix and pianist Dario Rodighiero. I enjoyed so much their live jazz/bossa nova performance that I made a video out of it! The audience appreciated it as well. You can see and hear them cheering and clapping.

BAND MUSIC STYLES AND MEMBERS

The Jaffa Cakes band is a taste of the most famous songs in a retro style, that could be any genre of music, but mostly:

  • jazz,
  • blues,
  • swing,
  • funk.

They’ve got just a piano, drums and a voice. Yet they bring a unique mix of retro-modern songs in the blues, funk and jazz genre.

The 3 band members are:

  • Miss Phoenix @ Vocals
  • Dario Rodighiero Duck @ Piano
  • Paolo Zuddas @ Drums.

If you’d like to know more about each member, check their biographies:

Now getting excited and curious to listen to their music? If so, watch this video:

Duckstein Open-Air Festival Hamburg Hafen City 2015

Duckstein Festival

The summer has been filled so far with lots of open-air festivals in Hamburg (Germany), even if the weather hasn’t always been perfect! I attended the Duckstein festival at Magdeburg Harbour (in front of and next to the International Maritime Museum).

As you may have already guessed, Duckstein, the main festival sponsor, is a brewery. This brewery sells beers such as the Bavarian classic Hefeweiss, Pilsner, Dunkel and Altbier.

MAINLY ADULT AUDIENCE

The festival, due to its sponsor, was more adult-oriented. Shows during week time took place only in the evenings.

Furthermore, as you would probably be figuring out when visiting the festival website, you must be over 16 years of age to view its content. 16 years old is the minimum age to drink beers in Germany.

However, some of the shows were also open to families, in particular the circus shows.

For more information about this festival running in different cities of Germany during summertime, check their website.

BIG DADDY WILSON

I watched the wonderful and witty Big Daddy Wilson acoustic blues band with soul and gospel influences from Southern United States.

Big Daddy Wilson is originally from Edenton, North Carolina, where he sang in church. Then, he lived pretty much a country boy’s life. He didn’t know nor breakthrough with blues music back then.

Other artists such as Champion Jack Dupree, Louisiana Red, Eddie Boyd made Europe their home. They brought the blues with them and succeeded here better than in the U.S. And now there´s Big Daddy Wilson, an American singer and songwriter who found his home in Northern Germany.

But something is different regarding Big Daddy Wilson. When he came over from the U.S. there was no blues music in his baggage. He truly discovered his love for blues coming to Germany, where he has been awarded ‘Best Acoustic Artist’ in the Blues category.

His music is a fusion of gipsy queen from New Orleans, beats Jamaica-style as well as swing.

If you would like to buy his music or merchandise, check his website. You can also follow him on Facebook and Youtube.

KATAY SANTOS CIRCUS STREET SHOW

Later on, I had a good laugh watching the funny and interactive acrobatic Santos Circus street show, coming all the way from Venezuela.

Katay Santos street circus artist started learning Capoeira in 1998, where he began to develop strong skills in:

  • music,
  • fight,
  • dance
  • Acrobatics.

In 2003, he studied at the National Circus School in Havana, Cuba. Then he studied at the Acrobatics Art School in Wuqiao, China (2007-2008) where he learned:

  • Handstand in High Chairs,
  • Pot Balancing
  • Chinese Pole.

In 2006, he became a part of the regular staff at many professional circus and theatre companies in Venezuela.  Back then, he created his own shows as “Santos y Bigotes”, “A Chinese Tale” and “Santos Circus Show”.

Since then, he has been touring extensively over 100 cities worldwide, entertaining a variety of audiences.

For more information about him and his travelling circus, check his website. You can also follow him on Facebook and Youtube.

Street School Dance Battles organised by Vigozone in Hamburg (2015)

STREET SCHOOL DANCE

While planning a holiday trip in Hamburg (Germany), I researched any interesting hip-hop dance events in the city.

I came across the street school dance battles event. I received a free ticket for the dance live performances.

The street school dancers were teenagers of different ages with one common goal: giving the best performance they could to the audience.

And what a show! I felt the dance level was pretty high! I watched incredible crew choreography and battles from all styles, such as:

  • new style hip-hop,
  • locking,
  • popping,
  • b-boying
  • k-pop,
  • dancehall,
  • afrobeat
  • salsa.

STREET SCHOOL DANCE EVENT STAKEHOLDERS

The host himself was pretty good at dancing. He was also very entertaining. 🎉

One of the judges and his dance partner performed their duet choreography.

If you’d like to know more about the stakeholders at this event, check their Facebook event page.

Now, impatient to see what it looked like? Please find below a small slide show.

I filmed:

  • 4 battles,
  • 5 crew/duet choreography
  • 2 dance demonstrations from the presenter.

To watch them, I invite you to subscribe to my YouTube Channel!

Dead Prez hip hop duet live concert in Dublin, Ireland (2014)

DEAD PREZ

First of all, Dead Prez is a hip-hop duo from the United States, composed of stic.man and M-1 since 1996. M1 is originally from Brooklyn, New York. Stic.man is from Tallahassee, Florida.

The pair of rappers is inspired by revolutionaries from Malcolm X to Public Enemy.

They immersed themselves in political and social studies to forge their own confrontational style of hip-hop.

Their socialist lyrics focus on militant social justice,  Pan-Africanism and positivity.

The duo maintains an ethical stance against corporate control over the media, especially hip-hop record labels.

For more information about their work, check the following Wikipedia article.

ALBUM RELEASES AND COLLABORATIONS

Secondly, they released three albums “Let’s Get Free” (2000), “Revolutionary But Gangsta” (2004), and “Information Age” (2012) as well as several mixtapes.

In 2006, the group collaborated with the three remaining members of The Outlawz band on the ‘Can’t Sell Dope Forever’ song. A second track,  ‘Soldier 2 Soldier’ is the result of a joint record between Stic.man and Young Noble.

2014 Juste Debout World Hip Hop Dance Championships (selections and finals) new collaborations – event pictures and videos

Juste Debout (“just upright”) is an international and annual dance competition founded in 2001 by Bruce Soné in France which focuses on street dance styles. The four main categories are hip hop new style, house, locking and popping. They have also been welcoming experimental dances since few years.

2014 Juste Debout poster

This year, Juste Debout has also organised a whole week of activities prior to the event, such as dance workshops with the international judges and parties in various places.

I had the chance to attend the Slinked party and enjoyed listening to the Champion Sound live band. Please view below few pictures of the programme and videos of the event.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

They have also added two new disciplines: Just Dancehall by ragga jam and Just4Rockers. Both organisations are based in France and have an international scope.

I have been mostly attending the Just4Rockers breakdance cyphers in the “Salle Marcel Cerdan” in Bercy stadium and watched the finals of all disciplines on the main stage.

I am now happy to share with you videos and pictures I have taken at the event and hope you will feel the same vibes as I did. The competition was fierce and the show very much worth it! The organisers were also lovely.

It is important to be know that Just4Rockers venue was also a dance practice room. Although it was mostly dedicated to breakdancing, you will also find other dance styles (hip hop, popping, rn’b). Since there are quite a few videos (9 videos for this section and 3 videos of experimental dances finals), I am re-directing you to my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/emelinej1/videos

You will also find last year’s Juste Debout event videos if you are more interested in the other dance styles. So, feel free to subscribe to it!
